Get ready to roll the dice

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is an action video game wherein you can join another round of crazy tabletop gaming with the eccentric Tiny Tina of the Borderlands video game series. Developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games, this 3D looter shooter game is both a spin-off and a standalone game from the series.

More specifically, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is the sequel to the highly successful DLC of Borderlands 2, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. This time, you have more content to explore and actual character customization—just like how tabletop gaming works.

The adventure continues

Borderlands is an action role-playing first-person looter shooter video game franchise created by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games—set in an open-world space Western science fantasy setting wherein a mysterious planet becomes the hunting ground for aspiring Vault Hunters. Its first game of the same name was released in 2009 and its second game in 2012, Borderlands 2, became successful enough to launch several expansion packs.

One of these is Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, which is set after the events of Borderlands 2. Instead of the usual Western shooter gameplay, you experience the world of a fantasy-themed tabletop role-playing game known as “Bunkers and Badasses”—a clear parody of Dungeons and Dragons. Thanks to this DLC’s success, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was born and expands that concept.

Here, you’re joined by a new cast—but you can now customize your own character and even multi-class from a selection of six unique character skill trees. Magic can be wielded now and you can either play solo or party with up to three players in its online and local split-screen multiplayer. However, the same core gameplay is still here with the looter shooter genre, meaning that you can’t really upgrade weapons.

Enjoy an extensive class system

One difference between Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and previous Borderlands titles is its extensive class systems. Players can choose between six unique character skill trees patterned after the starting classes. Choose from the following skill trees:

  • Brr-Zerker: Frost-based bruisers specializing in powerful melee attacks imbued with freezing effects.
  • Clawbringer: Wielding thunder and flame, these frenzied faithful are more than elemental spellcasters. They can also buff their Wyverns as well as their other allies in co-op mode.
  • Graveborn: Based on the Dark Arts archetype, they can exchange health for additional damage or cast curses and spells.
  • Spellshot: Described as wizards with guns, Spellshots depend on their firearm as well as the rapid casting of spells. As such, they can equip two spells at a time or turn enemies into smaller, weaker forms.
  • Stabbomancer: An assassin-based character, it combines quick slashes imbued with magic. As such, they have skills regarding stealth, landing critical hits, and disabling the enemy.
  • Spore Warden: Mages attuned to nature, using the wind and the leaves to devastate enemies.

To add more content to the game, 2022 saw the release of the game’s DLC pack: Shattering Spectreglass. It comes with a new campaign story, focusing on Vesper’s memories tainted by the Redmourne. Check out new customization options for your Fatemaker. Also, players are granted additional stat presets with four new backstories: Nerfed by the Bunkermaster, Clownblood, Apprentice Barnacle Scraper, and Street Urchin Success Story.

A major addition to the DLC is the Blightcaller character class. Dealing various elemental damages, especially poison, they summon a massive Bog Totem turret to damage enemies. Not only is it a playable class, but it also opens up a lot of new multi-class builds. Feel free to test this out with new cosmetics and items from the returning Season Pass.

Go guns a-blazin’

All in all, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a great addition to the Borderlands franchise and an interesting standalone game for both new and old fans to try out. While it still retains the series’ core mechanic with loot and amassing different weapons to become stronger, it does add new features to match its wacky amalgamation of fantasy RPG and frenetic FPS gameplay.
